Photos of Phones and Phonographs (occasionally)
Dull.

This years award for most boring trade-stand freebie goes to Dells “Environmental Disposal” section for this plastic ruler. Seriously guys, “must try harder” – you’re giving out a *plastic* ruler that is probably going to end up in landfill… pretty soon.

Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery

Wow. What a venue! I’ve been up in Glasgow for the last few days at a conference, and the conference dinner on the last night was held in Kelvingrove museum and art gallery – just… wow!

Crow

Cor!
Erm, swift update – I’ve just been informed it’s not a crow, it’s just a black pigeon – sorry.

Hotel Nights

Tea and coffee making facilities. It was the most interesting thing about the hotel room. Honest!

Cold Cures

I’ve got sniffles, a sore throat, a cough and a headache. To ease the pain while my body sorts itself out, I’m making myself “hot lemon and honey” – recipe as follows:
- juice of half a lemon (astringent, antiseptic)
- 2 teaspoons of honey (soothing)
- a mug of hot water (steamy vapour decongestant)
- a generous slug of cheap whisky (anaesthetic)
It’s really rather effective, and doesn’t have that nasty aftertaste that lemsip does.
Note that this is the only use I would consider this bottle of “Finest Scotch Whisky Special Blend” for – it’s not drinkable unless you drown it in hot lemon and honey and drink it while the cold has knocked out your tastebuds.
But then it was a gift, I can’t remember who from though. Still, if anyone reading this is considering buying me whisky – please ask me first! I prefer bottles that I can drink without having to be ill to do so…

Bastards!

My car was broken into last night.
Nothing was pinched (the only thing of value in the car was 7 Henrys Delphin juggling clubs – total value about £90 – which they left on my back seat) and it’s not the hassle of getting the window replaced, the mess I’ve got to clear up, or even the feeling of intrusion caused by people being on my property uninvited that’s annoyed me.
It’s that I got up early this morning so that I could drive down to Horsham and spend a (much needed) weekend with J – That plan has gone out the window (ha!) because instead of spending time with my better half I’m stuck in Bristol until 3pm which is the earliest the window people can replace it.
So, weekend plans are stuffed, I’m £60 out of pocket for the window, and to top it all I think I’ve got the beginnings of a sore throat.
Hopefully the day will improve, and I’ll have an opportunity to put up a more photographically interesting subject later.

Office Chopper

Jonathan in the office has bought a small remote controlled helicopter. It’s only about 7″ long! It’s easier to fly than a full blown chopper as it’s only got 2 controls – but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to fly (or photograph!)

Wood and Windows

I don’t normally like wood cladding on buildings as I think it looks messy when it fades and the water stains set in. However, this building is 2 years old now, and the wood still looks fresh and new. I wonder what it’s treated with.

The Last of James Last

I’ve been listening to my James Last records this evening. This upgrade-related problem has been winding me up, and the soothing sounds of James Last and his orchestra have just about taken the edge off it.
This particular track is “Never on Sunday” from his 1970 album “An evening out with James Last” and is one of my favourites from this album.

Site wobbles
Yes, I know the site is wobbling and all the pictures have vanished. You can all stop emailing me about it.
I made the stupid mistake of trying to upgrade the software that runs the site – and it seems that the new version of the software uses *significantly* different urls for the photos – so different infact that I can’t easily craft a set of rewrite rules to fix things transparently.
So I’m going to do it by hand.
I’ll update this post with my progress.
Update: 1am Wednesday – I’m going to have to do this by hand editing every single sodding blog post. All 127 of them. I’m not realistically going to manage to do that all in one go so I’ll do it a bit at a time over the next few evenings.
Update: 1:40am Wednesday – I’ve done March/April and I’m now making mistakes, so I’m going to bed.
Update: 21:15 Wednesday – I’ve done February – and am having a break for some food. I should really take a photo for today at some point
Update: 23:25 Saturday – I’ve done back as far as August.
Update: 17:47 Sunday – I’ve fixed all broken image links. At last.
Update: 19:00 Sunday – Introduced the “Archives” menu, fixed up the photoalbum theme
Update: 19:40 Sunday – Imported all the image names and descriptions from the old database
Update: 20:25 Sunday – The albums are, for the most part, now in chronological order. There is a quirk with february – but it’ll do.
Still ToDo:
Fix up Feb / Jan / earlier posts
Fix the “Photo albums” menu to work with the new gallery software
Import the gallery/album/image titles from the old (and incompatible) database
Pick through the new software and re-order the galleries in reverse chronological order
Fix the stylesheet so it matches what I used to have
- expose image ratings on blog posts (one of the two main reasons for upgrading)
If I ever decide to start a forklift upgrade of the code at 10:30pm – somebody slap me.
