Brothers

Brothers - 2008-05-11

To paraphrase an MSN conversation from earlier…

(21:42:29) Paul Seward: I’m having another “damn, it’s almost 10pm and I’ve not taken a photo yet” moment
(21:42:39) Azrelle: hahahahahaha
(21:42:45) Azrelle: now you know why i quit
(21:43:16) Paul Seward: I would quit – but I’m too stubborn

Red Ace

Red Ace - 2008-05-10

Just a quickie from me today, as I’ve been a busy bunny in the garden planting and weeding, I’ve made the last of the Bungay passes,  as well as building 2 new gizmos for my flash guns (Vivitar 283′s) so that I’ve got better control over their light output.

I’ll write it up at some point as my design has a couple of advantages over the many designs that are out there.  It has a linear scale which makes setting flash intensity more intuitive, it has “full power, max power, variable power” settings, it’s non-destructive (so I can reverse the mod in seconds if I should ever need to), it’s safe (no hacking the flash apart exposing those nasty big capacitors) and once I’ve got around to buying some sockets, it’ll have 3.5mm jacks for use as a trigger input to make it easier to use with my cheap ass audio trigger. (Or some pocket wizards if I ever win the lottery)

It’s probably only of interest to those with Vivitar 283s though – which is probably not any of you lot.

Thunder… Lightning…

Lightning - 2008-05-09

The way you love me is frightening!

The focus on this is waaay off, but it’s the first time I’ve tried to shoot lightning.  Lessons learned:

  • Autofocus doesn’t work for this
  • Winding the focus all the way forwards doesn’t set it to infinity on this lens, even though it probably should.
  • If something looks in focus on the LCD, don’t be lazy and assume it is – zoom in to check – before the lighting gets good. *kicks himself*
  • Buy an umbrella to keep the rain off yourself and the camera, as holding up a dustbin lid gets tiring quickly

Summer’s Here!

Royal Fort Gardens - 2008-05-08

Today was gorgeous, and it seemed like every student in Bristol descended on Royal Fort Gardens to lie around in the sunshine.  And yes, those are buttercups in the bottom right corner, but I’m saving all my buttercup shots for the week after next!

Bonus Muffin!

Bonus Muffin! - 2008-05-07

When I unpacked my camera bag tonight, I found this muffin.  I’d bought it on my way to work and then forgotten about it.

Life’s always better with a good muffin.

I was also trying out a new technique with a piece of clear perspex, some white paper and a pair of strobes.  I like the lighting on the muffin, but the lack of shadow or reflection makes it look like it’s been cut out – it hasn’t!  I’m not sure I like that.  The way the depth of field has softened the edges doesn’t help.

Remind Me.

Voigtlander Brilliant!

Voigtlander Brilliant - 2008-05-05

I found this camera in a charity shop at the weekend, it’s in gorgeous condition, complete with leather case. They wanted a fiver for it but I had an incling that they go for a bit more than that on ebay.  A brief search of closed listings indicates that they go for about 3 times that for models with cosmetic defects.  As far as I can tell, this one’s mint!

Even better though – it came with a roll of exposed film which appears to be 1950s (based on a quick google for the film type)  I think I’ll drop that in for processing tomorrow and see what random photos I get out of it!

Southwater Swan

Yet another swan - 2008-05-04

I know I took a photo of a swan yesterday, but this is a different swan, on a different lake.

Meet Gucci

Gucci - 2008-05-03

We went up to the field this afternoon to see J’s mums horses. This is Gucci, you can’t really see it from this angle, but she’s got a handlebar ‘tache and would look superb with a top hat and monocle.

Special mentions for today include: a basketball hoop (which would have been todays photo if it had a basketball player mid-dunk), a swan and morph – who is J’s horse – he’s lovely, but getting a bit old now.

New Balls Please!

New Balls Please - 2008-05-02

This ball looked lonely, so I thought I’d introduce it to you lot so it could have some friends.  Play nicely!
