Old Clock New Home

Clock - 2008-08-10

This clock was given to my Gran (on my dads side) in 1938 when she left her job at the co-op.  She had it with her in the nursing home when she finally passed on in January 2005.  At some point during her time in the nursing home it stopped working, and it hasn’t run since.

Tonight, I fixed it.

It’s ticking away above my fireplace.  I like the sound of a ticking clock.  I’ll spend the next week or so fiddling and adjusting the pendulum to get it to keep good time, and doing some reading so I can work out how to repair the hinge and reglaze the face.

On the one hand I’m happy that I fixed it, on the other hand I’m doing a lot of thinking about family and friends.  Some of whom need a lot of thinking about.  They know who they are, they should know I’m thinking about them.

I feel sick

Raspberry Eton Mess - 2008-08-10

This is only a small glass of Raspberry “Eton Mess” (Pretty much whip double cream with a bit of sugar and a couple of drops of vanilla essence, add a crushed meringue and some raspberries – serve) but it’s a bit sickly, so that’s all I can manage.

Oh, and I’ll let you into a secret.  That’s not a reflection.

Magic Number

No real photo from me today, the weather’s been miserable and I’ve spent all day shampooing my carpets.

My life is so rock and roll it hurts.

Modern Clockwork

3 meter clock V1.5 - 2008-08-08

My new bag full of components turned up today, including the right capacitors, so I can crack on with my “3 meter clock” – An evening of soldering later, and it turns out that I was right about my “throw more capacitors at the power supply until the microcontroller runs” theory.

I now have the guts of the clock, I have the meters mounted, all I need now is a back panel, some meter facias and a serial cable.  (I’m well aware that this post makes very little sense just now – but all will become clear once the beast is constructed)

Bristol Balloon Fiesta – Nightglow

Nightglow Fireworks - 2008-08-07

I went to the balloon fiesta, to see the “nightglow” (basically 30 or so hot air balloons, tethered, turning their burners on and off in time to music with a smattering of fireworks added for good measure) Most impressive really.

Two Doors, Outdoors.

Door, Fridge - 2008-08-06

Two doors.

One leads to an empty box filled with rotting, decaying, transient organic matter.

One leads to a world of widgets, gadgets, and long forgotten tools with no clearly defined purpose.

I know which I would open.

Yet another boring still life

Glass of Coins - 2008-08-05

I’m not going to lie to you, and pretend that this is anything other than a total lack of inspiration.

Flowers

Orange Flower - 2008-08-04

J sent me a bunch of flowers today, to appologise for canceling his trip to Bristol next weekend.  It was a very sweet gesture and it did make me feel a little better about the stinking rotten morning I had – but I always feel a bit uncomfortable taking delivery of a bunch of flowers at the office.

Still, gave me an excuse to break out the macro lens again.

Honorable mentions today go to life through a lens and the slightly odd green flower.  The full bunch can be seen here

Lying Down

Lying Down - 2008-08-03

I’m sooo bored with self portraits.  I know this is only the second one which has made it as far as the blog, but I’ve shot several.  None of them really show my face because I just can’t get it to look natural while I’m waiting for a self timer to go off.

So, to get any further with this whole portrait thing, I need a model. Does anyone (Based in Bristol or Crawley) fancy modeling for me?

Onions

Fresh Onion - 2008-08-02

I harvested my onion crop today.  I seem to have done quite well for onions this year.  I’ve got 2 strings of onions hanging up to dry,  most of which are of a useful size (ie – too big to pickle!) and some of them are comparatively large!

I’ve made a note of what I did differently this year (mainly where i sourced the sets, what type of soil they went in, spacing, that sort of thing) so next year, hopefully I can scale up a bit further.
