Section of an email I just received:

This was commissioned by Orange and is called the "Telespine", but I am not aware of who designed it. From memory Orange held a competition for phone mast designs - and I even vaguely remember it was judged by the Prince of Wales (or did I dream that bit, because it sounds too good to be true!)

It was, indeed, used as a mobile phone mast by Orange for a while, but no longer.
As far as I know it will now just remain here as sculpture.

Thanks to Mike from @Bristol for the info!

I've been trying to work out what that piece is called, google is being remarkably tight lipped on the matter. All I can find is photos on flickr calling it "Spine" which I'm not sure I trust!
Also, it looks as though it's not *currently* a phone mast as I can't find it listed on the offcom sitefinder
I'm intrigued though, so I've sent a couple of emails to people who should know. I'll update the comments when I find out!

Nice picture. I like the hole in the clouds, it makes a nice focal point.

Also, happy belated Seward's day! I had never heard of it until yesterday. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seward%27s_Day
