Finding his photographic feet, one photo at a time

New Shoes

Having spent the last couple of weeks with wet feet due to some leaky trainers, I finally gave in and went shoe shopping. I hate shoe shopping.

You see, I have UK size 5 feet, which is so small I can’t shop in the “adult” section of the shoe shops, so all my shoes come from at best the “teens” section, or at worst the “kids” section.

Being a man, on my own, hanging around in the kids section of shoe shops isn’t a lot of fun.  I get a lot of funny looks from parents and shop assistants. I’m only 32, so this isn’t going to get any easier as I get older.

Still, at least I shaved my beard off at the weekend.

This isn’t quite what this photo looked like in my head, but is as close as I can get it. It could do with another source back right to give the top edge of the trainers a bit of pop and lift them off the background a touch but I don’t have a third source (or rather I do, but have no way to trigger it) and I’m not feeling creative enough to reconfigure everything to get enough light onto a reflector back there.

I would be tempted to spend the rest of the week taking photos of my trainers, but to be honest I need to start wearing them!

Green GPO 746

My new green GPO 746 turned up today.

The line cord on it is the wrong colour for the phone, and is fitted with a Plug 420. The mic element is an electronic Transmitter No. 21A, and there’s a label on the bottom dated 1987. This all makes me think it was a replacement phone issued in the late 80s to a house which already had “Extension Plan 4″ instalation.

I think all it really needs doing to it is a new (green!) line cord, and a new handset cord as the existing one is a bit stretched, then a bit of a clean and it’ll be a fine addition to my growing collection.

I’m also making progress on the plan to build a small intercom/pabx to plug the collection into, they’re more fun if they’re working!

Mystery Phone – Identified!

Thanks to the marvelous Sam Hallas – I’ve identified the mystery phone I bought from ebay.  It seems to be a “Telefonbau und Normalzeit” (T&N) E2 – so we were right, it is a German design – although it was likely to have been supplied in the UK.

Now that I know what it is, and have a reasonable idea what plastic it is, I can set about taking it apart to clean it up.  As you can see from the next picture, it’s quite clearly spent the last 40 years in someones shed!

So, that’s been the sum total of my progress for the weekend.

Blackwoods Gin

I think this is as close as I’m going to get to my mental image of this bottle of Blackwoods Gin. The label is certainly better lit than the previous version thanks to an improvised softbox made from a pillowcase, and a couple of windscreen reflectors.

The label on the back of the bottle is a bit distracting, and if I was treating this as a commercial (or even portfolio!) shot I’d probably soak it off – but I can’t bring myself to do that to a real bottle.

Anyway, itch scratched. On to the next idea.

More Gin

This needs more work, but more work requires more charged AA batteries than I have available.  Besides, this was shot DSC_9999.* from my DSLR.  I think that means I’ve taken somewhere in the region of 12000 photos with this camera so far (It took me months to work out that I could stop it counting from 0 with each fresh card)

That label is a bugger to light BTW.  Dark green matt printing on a reflective label. I need to do a bit more thinking, and then come back when I’ve done it better.
